What civil engineering course is all about?
Ans. Civil Engineering involves planning, designing and executing construction of infrastructural and structural works. The profession deals with a wide variety of engineering tasks including designing, supervision and construction activities of public works like roads, bridges, tunnels, buildings, airports, dams, water works, sewage systems, ports etc. and offers a multitude of challenging career opportunities, in conventional fields.
What a civil engineer is expected to do?
Ans. A civil engineer is responsible for planning and designing a project, constructing & completing the project to the required scale, and maintenance of the product. A civil engineer requires not only a high standard of engineering knowledge but also supervisory and administrative skills. The planning part of their work involves site investigation, feasibility studies, creating solutions to complications that may occur due to soil conditions, earth quakes and the actual designing of structures. They have to work with the guidelines of the local government authority and get plans approved by the relevant authority. They may prepare cost estimates and set construction schedules. Construction work involves dealing with clients, architects, government officials, contractors and the supervision of work according to standards. Their work also involves the maintenance and repair of the project. Design & Project survey & Project preparation work is also done by Civil Engineers.
What is the need of this course?
Ans. Being a core branch of engineering Civil engineers will always be needed to maintain and repair existing facilities and structures and to construct new ones. After doing B.Tech, one can look for jobs in road projects, building work, infrastructure projects, consultancy firms, quality testing laboratories or housing societies. There is a high demand for experienced civil engineers in developed countries also; and in Middle East; as many Indian firms are winning overseas and international contracts.

Ans. The job prospects for Civil Engineers currently are at an all time best. With investments to the tune of 2,00,000 crore of rupees taking place in the infrastructure segment alone, over 20,000 civil engineers are needed every year. Added to these are the power plants, Industrial Plants & building, Housing & urban development, transportation and several other sectors of the economy; creating added demand for Civil Engineers.
This course needs a person to work in teams or as individuals?
Ans. Civil Engineering is often about being part of a team that requires people with many different kinds of skills. Yet there is also plenty of space for individual flair and imagination, but the work is always carried out in team.
Won’t salaries for civil professionals fall as companies turn to cheaper labor overseas?

With the rapid growth of economy witnessed during the last 5 years there is a huge boom in infrastructure & it is today the largest employment generating segment of the economy.
