NBA – What Are the Criterions?

NBA (National Board of Accreditation) is a process of quality assurance that gives credit on the strategies of academic activities and objectives of the institutions. This was constituted by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The main objective of NBA is to develop Quality Conscious system of Technical Education. Its evaluation process is specially designed to facilitate identification of strengths and weaknesses of the programs under accreditation. In this process, the evaluation process is based on a set of eight broad-based criteria. These criteria are :-

Organization and Governance

This criterion is basically applied to Institutional management, Organization and Governance. Every college must have its own mission and a set of goals. Every program of the institution should also have its objectives and goals. These missions and goals should be articulated and made known to each person in the college. This criterion depends on various qualities such as leadership, motivation, transparency of the operation, decentralization and delegation of powers, participation of the faculty in the management etc.

Financial Resources, allocation and utilization

Financial stability is essential for every institution. Its financial resources should be sufficient to sustain for the achievement of current educational objectives and for providing the improvements in the future. In this NBA Criterion, the most important part is the allocation of adequate budget for capital works and Operational budget and development budget of recurring type and their utilization for the institutional or departmental budget.

Central Facilities

In the Institution, there must be adequate space and appropriate physical resources along with laboratories, equipments, material, library and other ancillary facilities. In the examination of these resources, it should ensure provisions for safety, security and hygiene.

Human Resources: Faculty and Staff

The qualifications of the faculty members relevant to the program can be measured through their advanced degrees, their scholarship, creative activities and professional experience. The selection of faculty members reflects the effectiveness of the commitment of the management. In this NBA Criterion, the institution is expected to adopt an open process for recruiting its faculty members.

Human Resources: Students

In this criterion, the administrative policies and procedures should be objective and very transparent. The effectiveness of the institute depends on the number of students who have taken admission on the basis of National or State level tests and their overall ranking in the entrance exam. In all these things, the evaluation procedures, academic results and the time required for this competition are very important.

Teaching Learning Process

In teaching learning process criterion, each undergraduate degree program should represent general and specialized professional content of adequate depth and breadth and it should also include the appropriate Humanities and Science components. The main objective of every program is to deliver knowledge and skills in the specific discipline.

Supplementary Processes

In NBA Accreditation, the institution should give the environment for the development of intellectual as well as the personality development of the students. In this regard, the institution should have the personality development opportunities through co-curricular and extra-curricular activities and student services. The students, who are undergoing the program, should have access to facilities for the career development, counseling and health education.

Research & Development and Interaction Effort

In this NBA Criterion, teaching staff members should participate in projects and quality improvement programs in research institutions or University departments. This involvement of teachers will improve the teaching learning process as well as enhance the quality of project work. In postgraduate degree programs, the purpose should be to attain the stature of a Centre of Excellence.
